Creating a playroom your kids will adore is easy and fun.   

With the right furnishings and toys, you can design a space for children to learn and grow. 

Kids love pint size furniture.    So, when you’re designing your playroom (or play area), keep in mind these beautiful and functional pieces for your tots. 

  I speak from experience.     As a Mom, the investment we made in our kids furniture for their playroom and playhouse as more than paid for itself.  

The pleasure our children and their friends get from having their own space is wonderful   And, their own sized furniture is the icing on the cake.  

Our girls have an upholstered sofa set (ottoman included) which we’ve had for years and will have for many more.  

Their table-and-chair set is so well worn with paint, marker, and who-knows-what that it’s hard to see the original finish.   But, the fun goes on.      

If you have the space, I highly recommend creating a ‘kids only’ zone for your children.

Teens and Tweens have strong desires to express themselves in a very personal way.   Part of that is to create a space that reflects who they are or what they aspire to be.

We love working with our teen and tween customers.  And, as a parent, you can use this time with your teen to collaborate on a fun project.     If you need a ‘mediator’, we’re here for you.   But, to get you started, here are a few tips.

Let your teen know you support (within reason) his or her wish for self-expression through room decor and even an independent-minded child will turn to you for help and advice.    Keep in mind that this is his or her room, and will not be necessary what you would like.   

You may already know that many  kids this age are  brand conscious,  However,  most have no desire for the high-end décor  looks adults crave. Fun, funky, and free-spirited designs hold more appeal – even for the teen who likes the finer things in life!

Hopefully, you and your child can come to some agreement about such major items as a desk, a bed, and dresser, make sure to  buy the best “real” furnishings your budget allows. Then, fill in with fun, low-cost novelties like beanbag chairs in jellybean colors, funky lamps, and dramatically colored bedding you won’t mind replacing when a new look comes along in a few years.    We wholeheartedly support this theory with kids of any age.  Spend your dollars on items that will last (furniture, light fixture etc.), and fill in with the less expensive decorative items that you will not mind replacing.

Painted walls are a practical choice.    Paint is an easy and inexpensive thing to change – and will make a big splash in a room.  You’ll want to tell your child that paint looks a lot darker and more vivid on four walls than in a tiny paint chip and that professional designers usually advocate choosing a color two or three steps lighter than the color you like best on the paint chip. That said, buy the smallest container you can of several colors in the running, and have your child paint an area about three feet square on one wall with each of the colors. Let your child choose the hue that looks best. (One big exception to starting with the paint color is if your child has already picked out a fabric. Then, you’ll probably want to suggest paint to coordinate with the lightest color in the fabric.)     If your teen has his or her heart set on a dramatic color, consider an accent wall.

Patience, patience and more patience.    Teens are trying to define themselves when they decorate a room, so be patient.     Allow lots of time for decisions and help them avoid impulse purchases.   Tape photos and fabric samples on walls and allow your teen to take their time in choosing.   

If the power struggle brings the project to a standstill, don’t be afraid to ask an interior designer or boutique store for assistance in talking with your teen.  

Most important, have fun and use this as an opportunity to collaborate and spend time with your teen!

What is a FLOOR MODEL in a furniture retail store ?

A floor model is a piece of furniture, lighting, rug, or other item  placed in a   retail shop’s  sales area for  display purposes. Floor models are taken out of their  packaging  and (if possible) plugged in or hung up.

This allows the shopper to test the quality of the displayed merchandise, or compare between different models of a certain type of  furniture or room décor item.

The term “floor model” can sometimes be a misnomer since some items aren’t literally on the floor, but rather a table, shelf or wall.

Because floor models see  more use and are subject to a bit more wear and tear than they would if they were not used for display,  some stores may sometimes discount them when selling them.

Others stores will tend to remain firm on the price.

Because we love to ‘re-decorate’ our store regularly to display new and different styles of rooms, we will often discount some (but not all) of our floor models.    These are brand new items that have been lovingly maintained by us.
