Decorating Tips for Children's Rooms Our philosophy in decorating a baby or child’s room is to make choices that are long lasting. Children grow fast, so a few good style and color choices in the beginning can make all the difference. Accessories, wall stickers and such are easy and inexpensive to change as a child grows. Decorating in a juvenile theme will often lead to regrets later. Invest in a few good pieces that can grow with the child. For example, in a boys room, take a look at the denim blue rug we used in our ‘Stars’ Designer Room. This rug is 100% wool and a ‘neutral’ color that will be just as appropriate for your boy when he is a teenager as it is for him as a baby. The same for the chandelier and the color scheme. Blue, Red and White are always classic. The chandelier and rug will co-ordinate beautifully with either teddy bears (for a baby) or sports (for a teen).
If you do like a ‘theme’ room, use accessories. Install the basics and let the kids “theme” the room themselves as they get older. Involve older children in the design process. The room will last longer because they were part of the decision so will not get as tired of it.
Consider the existing style of your home when designing your child’s room. For example, if your home is traditional, use a style and color palette that works well with the rest of your home. Take a look at our classic pink and green color schemes for girls - they will never fade from style. If your home is modern, a clean bright color palette would be more suitable. We love the Marimekko children’s bedding as a starting point. The children’s rooms should be designed so they are visually connected to the rest of the home.
